There would be no hip-hop without jazz, says Robert Glasper, pianist, composer, and producer.
And he backs it up with examples in the video below.
“Jazz is the mother and father of hip-hop music,” Glasper says. “They’re both music that was born out of oppression. They’re both kind of like protest music, going against the grain.”
He says hip-hop producers who want a lot of melodies go straight to jazz for inspiration, to steal like an artist.
“And that’s the thing,” he says. “That’s the beauty of music — you can learn so many different things from everywhere. It’s full-circle.”
Yeah, music is full-circle.
