I recently got coffee with a fellow songwriter and he told me something interesting.
He had just done a songwriting session with a woman who had written hits for big-name artists.
And he said this hit songwriter basically said, “So what? None of that matters. What am I doing now?”
In other words, your accomplishments mean nothing.
It doesn’t matter what successes ‒ or failures ‒ you’ve had in music.
Yes, you can learn from them, but they don’t define you. They don’t determine your success right now in the present moment.
We’ve all seen artists blow up and get their 15 minutes of fame, only to never be heard of again.
We’ve also seen artists work their butts off, and only after years of working do they start to get recognition.
That’s because, to create a sustainable career in music, there are two main factors you need:
The takeaway?
You must keep creating.
It doesn’t matter what you did or didn’t do yesterday.
Just keep going. Do a little music every day if that’s all you have time for.
Ask yourself…
“Right now, today, am I making music that’s meaningful, interesting, and creative?”
Your accomplishments mean nothing. Your failures mean nothing.
All that matters is the musician you are right now.
Now go create something.
