Here’s Why You’re Never Too Old To Play An Instrument

I’m not even 30 yet, but I know that one of the worst excuses is “I’m too old.”

But you know what, if the guy in the below picture — Mohr Keet — can go bungee jumping at 96 years old, you can pick up a guitar.

You can learn something new regardless of your age.

And here are two big reasons why you should.

It’s guaranteed fun

Learning guitar sounds overwhelming. That is, if you think about it like learning the guitar.

If you think about it like bungee jumping, you’ll have a blast.

If you just learn songs you already love, you’ll enjoy it. If you can play a Beatles song or a Michael Jackson song, think of how much more fun that would be than just listening to it.

Playing a song just adds to your appreciation of that song.

Your brain can still learn

It takes a lot for our brains to give up.

It’s totally possible for your brain to learn an instrument regardless of your age, according to Norman Weinberger, a neuroscientist at University of California Irvine.

“A lot of people believe the brain isn’t very plastic after puberty,” Weinberger told NPR. “In fact, the brain maintains its ability to change. Is it as easy to learn something when you’re 65 as it is at 5? No. But can it be done? Yes.”

Plus, scientists have found over and over again how beneficial playing music is to the brain.

So just go for it. Pick up a guitar. Buy a keyboard. Grab a trumpet from your local pawn shop.

Just try to learn to play an instrument. It’s fun and good for you.
