If you want to build a sustainable music career on the side without getting overwhelmed, read on…
Hi. My name is Caleb J. Murphy. I’m a songwriter, producer, and musician advocate based in Austin, Tx., where I live with my two kids.
I make a living producing other artists, via sync licensing, and writing.
I’ve written for music blogs like Bandzoogle, Ari’s Take, Digital Music News, and many others. Writing content that helps other musicians is the type of writing I love. But I’ve also done a ton of copywriting for small businesses (gotta pay the bills, you know?).
If you’re a part-time musician, let me show you how Musician With A Day Job can help you…
Have you ever asked yourself any of these questions:
- “I’m so busy with life stuff. How in the world am I supposed to build a music career?”
- “Can I produce and release pro-quality music at home?”
- “How can I make money from music without sacrificing my creative freedom?”
- “I want to start taking my music career seriously. But where do I even start?”
Yeah? Then you’re in the right place.
Whether you want to make a living as a full-time musician or just find more time to make music on the side, Musician With A Day Job has your solutions.
As a fellow musician who has worked plenty of day jobs (scout for a real estate company, customer service agent for a bank, marketing copywriter), I can help you.

A Wandering Musician With No Plan
I released my first music in 2009. I used a crappy microphone, a tiny audio interface, GarageBand, and my parents’ garage.
No radio stations aired it.
No blogs wrote about it.
I didn’t really make money from it.
Nothing happened because I didn’t know what I was doing.
I was just following the path I saw other musicians take: release some music, play some shows, then do it all over again and hope someone “discovers” me.
But that obviously didn’t happen.

And you think I would’ve learned from this. Maybe change something, try to be more intentional.
Nope.
Because I had no plan, I was a wandering musician. I was drifting and had no direction.
For the following 9-10 years, I kept doing this. Release an album or EP. Play some local/regional shows. Not make money. Rinse and repeat.
And it started to get really frustrating. Why weren’t people listening to my music? How come my fanbase wasn’t really growing? Where’s the money in music?!
The Mental Shift That Changed My Life and Music Career

In 2018, I started to learn something that changed the whole trajectory of my music career…
Success is subjective.
I learned I don’t have to blindly follow what worked for other musicians. I can build a career that fits my personality and revolves around what I love doing.
That’s when I made a plan.
And things changed. I didn’t feel lost anymore. I knew where I was going and how to get what I wanted.
Then good things started to happen…
Indie filmmakers started licensing my music.
My Spotify following and monthly listenership grew.
Bloggers started paying attention to me.
My songs were on TV shows on ABC and NBC.
People started hiring me to produce their music.
And now, I make a consistent side income from music doing the specific things I enjoy.
My music career is slowly growing. My music income is helping me pay the bills.
(See how I make money from music).
But most importantly, I’m able to commit more time each day to make music.
